The Hungry Hungarian
Once upon a time, a handsome young guy, aged nearly 18, decided to go to the United States to become an exchange student and advance his tennis techniques, learn from the professionals so to be one of them one day.
It was an awful difficult to get the finance together to accomplish his dream and he nearly had to give it up when his guarding angel interrupted and got a decent amount of sponsorship from the Alcoa Fundation. We are ever so grateful for that as well everybody who helped from the local AFS community in any way.
He is just SOOOO successful with his host family, they are absolutely adorable people.
But why am I telling you all this?
It's all about drawing your attention to the cross-cultural issue, which is why we are learning languages.
Did you know that the Americans - the British are the same, though :) - always crack this stupid joke: "Oh you're Hungarian, you must be hungry!" and they have a good laugh.
Well, this young man happens to be my son, Andras, who is getting used to this as he gets it almost every day when he meets new people.
And here is where the fun begins: last night was the first time I Skyped with the host mother. After a short introduction she said: "Oh my God, he eats like a monster! He's the always hungry Hungarian."
I thought it was extremely funny as I do remember the times I moved to the UK and I was always hungry. So it is not only play on words but due to the fact their main meal is in the evening at dinner time, it takes a while for a Hungarian stomach to adjust to that.
Well, I hope by now you're not only hungry for food but hungry for new words and expressions. I tell you what, it is ever so beneficial to learn a language! The world opens up and you never know where the wind takes you...
Just watch out for the opportunities. But beware, the opportunity comes at a very unexpected time and you have to be ready. Go get ready now and come along to the nationwide whole-day event:
